Mountaineering in Öræfi
Southeast Iceland

Öræfi is one of the best places in Iceland for climbing frozen
waterfalls. There are already many climbed routes in southeast Iceland, but there are
hundreds of waterfalls still waiting for first ascents.
Here I put info on mountaineering possibilities in Öræfi and
Southeast Iceland. In the Ice Climbing pages I try
to put every ice climbing route that has been climbed in Öræfi to my knowledge. I have also
started to expand the climbing guide to the west, to the area of
Kirkjubæjarklaustur and to the east, to Hornafjörður and Lón. There are lots of iceclimbing photos on these pages. The Alpine Routes pages
currently only describe the
route Postulínsleiðin on Hrútsfjallstindar (April 2000) and the route
Austurveggurinn on Þverártindsegg (May 2003) but there are more alpine routes in
the area. The Expeditions pages
describe a ski expedition across Iceland in March 1999 and hopefully I will find
time to put more storys later. I'm sorry if this is too much about my own
achievement, but this is the material I have the easiest access to. I will be
happy to put material from other climbers here too. Please note that some of the
pages are not finished.
Best wishes, Einar Rúnar Sigurðsson,
mountain guide of From Coast To Mountains travel service.
