Irpugilskertið

Ingimundur climbs Irpugilskertið, his sister (left) waits her turn.

At the boundary between the farms Hnappavellir and Fagurhólsmýri is a small gorge called Irpugil. There is a small ice pillar there soon after you enter the gorge and I went there with my son Aron and his friends from school, Ingimundur and Katrín. They are 12 and 13 year old and live on one of the farms of Hnappavellir. They were climbing for the first time.

Description/ Lýsing leiðar	Þetta er kerti, nokkuð bratt og skemtilegar hreyfingar í því, en ekki mjög hátt. Hitt verður að taka fram að þeir sem eru fyrstir til að klifra það eru auk mín og Arons 11 ára sonar míns eru 12 og 13 ára skólasystkini hans sem búa á Hnappavöllum. Kannski að landeigendur eigi sjálfir eftir að nota klifursvæðin sín á Hnappavöllum í fremtiden...

Lýsing:	We climbed the waterfall on the right side of the pool underneath it. The first 25 meters were steep and chandeliered on left side but more dry and cauliflowered on the right side and the upper part was WI 3. At the top of the waterfall we could walk on the frozen water, climb couple of 2 meter ice steps and then walk up and out from the gorge to the west side. I put - to the grade because even though it was vertical for a about 15-20 m we could always use the wall on the right to stand and rest.

Hnappavallahamrar

Hnappavallahamrar is the biggest rock climbing area of Iceland. There are lots of bolted and unbolted rock routes in these 15-20 meter high cliffs south of the farms Hnappavellir. In the winter there are several short water ice and mixed routes that form, normally in places that are too wet to climb in the summer.
Hnappavallahamrar often offer good conditions for practising short mixed routes on a lead or by putting up top rope. It is always possible to walk from the top in couple of minutes.

Toy Story

We put up this short but nice route in the beginning of the year 2001. We gave it this name because we mostly belayed with nuts and friends. It is found at the west side of the middle of the climbing area.

Addams Fjölskyldan

We call this route "The Addams Family" because this is the first route that the whole family makes the first ascent on. After me and my wife Matta had done the route, our 9 year old son Aron climbed it on a top rope.
This route is on the very west side of the climbing area (there are no bolted routes further west).

Description/ Lýsing leiðar	This is a short, fat ice pillar but since it gets quite vertical for few meters we put a + to the grade.
